The 2010 Cornerstone Awards will be presented to longtime Bishop Carroll supporters, Ms. Mary Parrish, and Mrs. Kathy Capon.
Miss Parrish was a tough-as-nails English teacher at BC for many years. Students came to know and love the literature that Ms. Parrish taught. No student (Philistine) could lead her down the garden path. Many a time must she have mulled over in the shower the lengths to which her students would go to avoid the inevitable critical analysis required. For decades, students complained about the work she demanded: the high expectations, the reading pace, the writing assignments. And yet (of course), for decades, those same students went off to universities far and wide, knocking the socks off their English 101 instructors, and naming Ms. Parrish as their favorite teacher. She is indeed a cornerstone of a Bishop Carroll education for thousands of students.
Mrs. Kathy Capon is a volunteer extraordinaire. Before, during and since the years her boys attended BC, Kathy has been an ardent supporter of the school and all its programs. She works in the kitchen; she buys supplies; she bakes cakes; she sits on boards; she enlists support; she presents awards. Finally, she is honored with the one she most deserves. Countless programs have benefitted from her involvement, her support, her love and care. She is a cornerstone on which the school community has been built, and we have been honored by her presence.
