Marie (Susie) McCombie ’70

Susie McCombieAfter graduating from Bishop Carroll in 1970, Susie received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. She taught for four years at St. Joseph’s in Portage, followed by a dedicated 33 years of teaching third and fifth grades at Holy Name in Ebensburg, where she still subs to this day.

Susie retired after an impressive 37 years of teaching, providing countless students with a quality Catholic education and preparing them for future success. “I had the distinction of being certified as a Master Catechist and recognized in the publication Who’s Who of American Teachers. They were both great honors,” she says. Besides teaching, Susie was a basketball coach at St. Joseph’s and Holy Name for many years. She strove to be fair and encouraging to all her players.

Today, Susie still has close ties to both Holy Name and Bishop Carroll. “At Holy Name, I do a lot of volunteer work, such as counting and submitting box tops and Campbell’s labels, and selling scrip on Sundays. At Bishop Carroll, I serve as the secretary of the Alumni Association, frequently attend sporting events, donate to the Named Scholarship annual campaign, and support fundraisers. I plan on staying involved with BC and Holy Name for many years to come,” says Susie.

Dedicating her life to Catholic education has allowed Susie to stay close to her Faith and share it with others on a daily basis. Susie is grateful for the preparation she received at Bishop Carroll for life after high school. “Bishop Carroll prepared me academically for college and for teaching and encouraged me to practice my Faith,” says Susie.

She shared some important advice for current Bishop Carroll students: “Stay close to your Faith and the Church, and work hard at everything you do. Don’t forget to enjoy your time at Bishop Carroll—the memories will last a lifetime, and always be a good friend. Friends will sustain you in difficult times.”

The Bishop Carroll community presented Susie with the Distinguished Alumni award at the Eighth Annual Carrollian Gala. We are so proud to have alumni like Susie who play an active role in our success, engage with current students, and make us proud to call them alumni!
