Jan Burley Celebrates 40 Years in Catholic Education

Thousands of Huskies can say that Jan Burley has made an impact on their education. After all, she is celebrating her 40th year as a Catholic school educator this year—all but two of which have been at Bishop Carroll.

Some of those former students are now her colleagues, including Bishop Carroll Principal Lorie Ratchford and Director of Admissions/Social Studies teacher Jonathan Nagy.

“As a student of Jan’s, I had a lot of respect for her,” said Mr. Nagy. “That respect has continued but expanded as I have come to know her as a friend as well. We work well together for the betterment of the students.”

“When I came on board as a faulty member, I was still calling her Ms. Burley,” Mr. Nagy added. “She said ‘just call me Jan’. That took some getting used to. But Bishop Carroll is a family, and a comfortable family at that. It didn’t take long to readjust.

Mrs. Ratchford, who also once was a student of Mrs. Burley’s, echoes these sentiments.

“Ms. Burley has been a mentor and a friend to me over the last 26 years,” said Mrs. Ratchford. “She has a true passion for math and shares that excitement with her students. We are very fortunate that she has committed herself to BC and Catholic education.”

Mr. Nagy bears witness to Mrs. Burley's passion for her career.

"She may not have ever said it, but her actions show it: Do what you love," he said. "Ms. Burley loves math and loves teaching it. It is inspiring when someone is that dediated to their chosen field and continues to want to relay that knowledge year after year."

"Jan Burley truly believes in Catholic education," he added. "Students that graduated 10, 20, 30, or 40 years ago still ask me, 'Is Ms. Burley still there? I remember this one time...' It is very hard to imagine BCCHS without Jan Burley."
