For many alumni, the courtyard within Bishop Carroll Catholic High School has been a mythical place. It had been a ‘see but don’t touch’ section of the property. Beautiful trees and flowers grow in this incredible space, but it has not been used extensively for any real purpose since the school first opened its’ doors.
One lesson learned from this past year is the importance of outdoor space. Restaurants, shops, and schools have all transitioned to using outdoor spaces more in their daily operations. As we look to further open doors for our students academically to better their experiences, we want to literally open the doors of the courtyard for them as well.
Right now, there are a few picnic tables on the patio area just outside of the cafeteria. Students enjoy eating breakfast and lunch at these tables when the weather cooperates on Husky Hill. Many teachers also take advantage of this space, holding class outdoors. However, there is only enough capacity at these tables to comfortably accommodate a couple dozen students. Additionally, the space can only be used when the weather is absolutely perfect, as there is no overhead cover.
A few years back, the school began holding most study halls in the library. This provides students with access to the many resources offered to them, and a chance to collaboratively work at tables. Believe it or not, there are actually doors that lead out of the library directly into the courtyard! These doors have rarely been cracked open in the last 60 years, but that is now changing. The area directly outside could be transformed into a great learning and reading area.
The students are excited about the possibility of using the courtyard more and went to the administrative team asking for ways to access the space for both learning and relaxation. Senior Alayna Przybys says, “It would be great to be outside more during our day, and I hope this happens!”
Several elements are requested for this special project:
- The creation of a patio area outside of the library
- A permanent roof/awning over the patio outside of the cafeteria
- The addition of more picnic tables outside of the cafeteria
- Outdoor furniture for the library area
- The installation of a walkway from the library patio to the cafeteria patio.
For all alumni who wished that they could have had the opportunity to use this space, now is the time to help make this a reality for our current student body. Not only are financial donations accepted towards this project, but also the time and energy of those who are willing to help with the project. If anyone is interested in donating or helping to complete the project, please contact Mr. Nagy at [email protected] or (814) 472-7500, extension 105.
