Bishop Carroll students not only do many things within the school, but many are active in their local communities as well.
Last fall, cousins and BC students and grads Josh McCool (2023), Jacob Vasilko (2019), Louis Kordish (2024), and Thomas Heinrich (2022), joined by their cousin William Heinrich, began work to create a disc golf course in Portage’s Crichton-McCormick Park. The designed course is 9 holes, complete with both long and short tees.
This was not an assignment or a requirement of the boys in any way. They said that they chose to do this all on their own because they love the game and thought having a course in the park would benefit the community. They took their idea to the park board over the summer, presenting them with a brochure and then mapping out the course with markers so that the board could visualize their design. The board gave them approval and they began fundraising with a goal of completion of the project by the end of spring.
So far, they have raised a total of $3400 through cash donations and their GoFundMe page at https://gofund.me/c5a42ec4 . They need some more additional funds to purchase the necessary equipment and set up the course. Besides raising enough funds to complete the project, their goal is to raise money and awareness for the park and engage the community in more activities.
Disc golf is played like traditional golf, but with disc golf, discs are used instead of balls and clubs. One throw (stroke) is counted each time the disc is thrown and when a penalty is incurred. The goal is to play each basket in the fewest strokes possible. The player with the lowest total strokes for the entire course wins. There are nearly 7,000 known disc golf courses in the United States alone, and it has become the fastest growing sport, suitable for people of all ages.
We are proud of these boys for the initiative they have taken to create a project from nothing but their desire to spread the joy they get from a sport they love to others. For more information on how you can help them turn their dream into a reality, please visit their GoFundMe page listed above.
