Long-time Bishop Carroll Physics, Computers, and Math teacher Ed Graffte began the Pen Club nearly two decades ago. Students have learned not only the art of making pens, letter openers, and other items, but they have learned valuable life skills about tools, precision, dedication, and having pride in their work. Mr. Graffte recently retired, but under the direction of Mr. McMullen, the Pen Club will continue.
The Pen Club has been relocated to the old faculty dining room next to the cafeteria. The room is being transformed into a “Tech Ed” room. Bishop Carroll is working to create curriculum centered on “hands-on DYI learning.” Instruction will include basic home care, tool usage, and other life skills.
Junior Liam Shawley is grateful for his experience with the Pen Club. He stated, “Pen club has taught me a valuable lesson of always thinking about safety first when working around machinery and it has showed me a new hobby that I enjoy.”
Preparations are being made to develop the curriculum, transform the space, and acquire the necessary equipment for the class. Individuals with interest in the program are welcome to reach out to the school and speak with Mr. McMullen.
